Wayne Gretzky or “The Great One” was purchased from the Indianapolis Racers of the WHA to the Edmonton Oilers just after 8 games into his rookie season with the WHA. He would be a protected selection the following year when the WHA joined the NHL. The Oilers, Whalers, Jets, Nordiques would join the NHL in the 1979-80 season with the WHA folding after the expansion. Gretzky would win the WHA Rookie of the Year award for the 1978-79 season with 110 points. He would become the a “Legend” during his NHL career, playing for the Oilers, Kings, Blues, and Rangers. He would win eight consecutive Hart Trophies (MVP) after joining the NHL. He would win the first of seven straight Art Ross Trophies for most points in the NHL in the 1980-81 season. He did so by shattering Bobby Orr’s assist record (102) and Phil Esposito’s points record (152) along the way with 109 assists and 164 total points. He would set numerous record in the NHL record books for goals in a season (92), assists in a season (162), total points in a season (215), total points in the playoffs (47), and assists in the playoffs (31) all with the Edmonton Oilers. He is considered to be one of the GOATs in professional sports. This would be an excellent addition to any collection.
